Understanding exponents

Exponents means multiply by itself, that many times. For example:

$a^1=a$
$a^2=a*a$
$a^3=a*a*a$
$a^4=a*a*a*a$
$a^5=a*a*a*a*a$
etc…

$a^2$

$a$ is the base.

² (square) is the exponent or index.

and $a^2$ put together are called a power.

$2a^2=2*a*a$

$(2a)^2=2a*2a$

$b+b+b=3b$

$b*b*b=b^3$

$6n*8n*n=48n^3$
